Summer 2018 Newsletter to Members
Dear Member
My main theme this year, as it was last year, highlights the Society’s financial situation. So, to get the bad news quickly out of the way, in order to attempt to cover costs, individual subscriptions will need to rise to £75, and doubles to £145, with guest tickets rising to £10.

Despite this radical increase, which is regrettable but inevitable due to reduced numbers of members, the average ‘view’ cost is far below commercial admission charges and still good value.

We will be able to maintain the ‘early bird’ discount of single £2 and double £4 for subscriptions paid by August 25th. We have now opened a bank account with Barclays, so that payments may be made direct (details on application forms) and cheques eliminated, but please add WWFS followed by your intial and surname as a reference to your payment so that it may be identified and also ensure your application slip is sent to the Treasurer.

To turn to the good news, we believe we have an exceptionally strong line-up of films and a good mix of drama and comedy, with award winners aplenty! A couple of innovations, too; a short account of personal reminiscences of the city to accompany ‘Letters from Baghdad’ and a double bill to end the season:‘My Life as a Courgette’ and ‘The Party’.

Reaction slips are most helpful to our programme planning and it is encouraging that responses to last season’s films were consistently good – with some notable highs.

We strive to maintain this quality and wish that the message could be spread more widely – not only would this help to maintain our existence, it could bring down the rate of subscriptions.

We do undertake targeted publicity in local libraries and by mention in the local press, but word of mouth can work wonders – so please spread the word amongst friends and neighbours – there is a world of entertainment to enjoy!

Our seasons run from September to the following April or early May. Films are shown at roughly 3-weekly intervals on Wednesdays, commencing at 8pm. There is a small Christmas party after the nearest screening prior to Christmas, which is free to members and their guests.

Our membership fee for the year 2018/19 is £75 for a single member, £145 for joint membership for two persons.

Discounts of £2 single and £4 double are available for applications made before August 25th.

Members book guests in advance with the Membership Secretary (contact details below), and pay £10 per guest on the door.

If you would like to join our Film Society, please print off this application form and follow the information contained within.

If you wish to contact our Membership Secretary, you can email our Membership Secretary at

Please include in your email your name, address, and email address and phone number. If you are requesting joint membership, these details should be supplied for the joint member as well. The email address is only used for matters directly related to the Film Society such as last minute changes in screenings, membership renewal etc.

If membership is full, names go on a chronological waiting list, and people on the waiting list will be contacted as soon as membership spaces become available, usually late August/early September just before the next film season starts.

The committee meets from time to time to select the films to be shown. Members are encouraged to nominate films they would like considered for the programme. If you would like to nominate a film, please email our Chairman, Ken Wilson, on
